Diego Andres Gonzalez Boneta was born in Mexico City, Mexico, but has citizenship in the three different countries! His father is Mexican while his mother an American with Puerto Rican and Spanish roots. Diego speaks Spanish and English fluently and believes that his musical talent comes from his grandfather.
Singing Soap Opera Stud
Diego has been acting and singing since he was a kid, appearing in several Spanish-language soap operas (called telenovelas) and rose to fame when landed a role on the teen telenovela Rebelde. Not satisfied with just working on his acting career, Diego also released a debut album in 2005 called Diego thatmade waves in Mexico, Brazil and Chile and were featured on Rebelde. He even opened tour dates for Hilary Duff! He followed this up with the album Indigo.
Soaps to the Silver Screen
In 2010 he started to land English speaking roles on American TV, starring for a time on ABC’s hit teen mystery show Pretty Little Liars as Alex Santiago, the tennis club cutie turned romantic interest of Spencer Hastings. He also played Javier Luna on 90210 and broke into American films with Mean Girls 2, playing opposite his friend Meaghan Martin.
His real breakthrough though was landing the coveted lead role in Adam Shankman’s comedy musical Rock of Ages, which was released in June 2012. Diego got to combine his love of acting and singing Drew Boley, an up-and-coming living in Los Angeles in the ‘80s.
Rumor has it that Diego is currently working on an English debut album with Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine tha may be out in late 2012 or early 2013.
