This week on So You Think You Can Dance (Season 9, Episode 5), the remaining contestants suffered through a grueling week of cuts in Las Vegas. Read Kidzworld’s recap of “Vegas Week,” which aired on June 20, 2012, to discover what you missed.
Vegas Week
Vegas week is never easy. It’s designed to separate the good from the great. Each day, the contestants were given a new round of choreography to learn and perform for the judges. One misstep would cost them their place in the competition.
Solo & Hip Hop
It all began with the solo round to remind the judges why they put each contestant through. Next came hip hop with former contestants-turned-choreographers Comfort and Twitch. Even though Hampton the Exorcist impressed the judges with his own b-boy routine, he couldn’t pick up someone else’s choreography and willingly bowed out of the competition, as did Dragon House member Andre.
Broadway & Jazz
On day 2, Tyce Diorio took the remaining contestants on a Broadway extravaganza, knocking out yet more hopefuls. Day 3 brought Sonja and her quirky jazz number. Dragon House member Cyrus made it through by the skin of his teeth, even though Sonja suggested that he get some contemporary experience. Meanwhile, Danielle Dominguez was kicked in the face while filling in as someone’s partner. This landed her in the hospital for 8 hours.
Group Round
That night, the contestants divided into groups and worked all through the night to choreograph their own routines. Danielle arrived back from the hospital late, and had to join a group that was already underway, setting them back. As a result, she was sent home the next day.
Ballroom
Last season, a dancer named Alexa nearly made it into the top 20. This week she struggled to show emotion in her face while she danced. After her group performance, the judges threatened to send her home. But her tears gave them second thoughts. She redeemed herself in the final choreography round - ballroom - where she showed off her sexy side and made the cut.
Next week, the judges make their final eliminations and decide which dancers will be in the top 20.
