Singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen shot to the top of the digital charts and caused an online trend with lip-synching celebs with her catchy-cute tune “Call Me Maybe,” and she recently got signed to Justin Bieber’s label, Schoolboy Records! Find out more in her Kidzworld Bio.
Small Town Girl
The 26-year-old Canadian singer was born in Mission, a small town in British Columbia, to parents who loved music. In fact, she says her dad used James Taylor’s classic soul songs to sing her to sleep as a child. A natural-born performer, Carly Rae left Mission to attend the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, B.C. and eventually the folk singer made her way to Vancouver, where she started an acoustic music night at a local café.
Canadian Idol
Carly Rae knew her big break had come when she won a spot on Canadian Idol, coming in third and going on tour around the world with the other winners. When Carly Rae returned to Vancouver she immediately landed a recording deal and started creating her debut album Tug of War, which established her as an artist in her homeland and resulted in lots of local radio play. But just three years later her folksy music would take a turn towards pop.
Curiosity
“I guess there’s a part of you that always wants to try something a little bit different than what you’ve done before,” said Carly about writing her hit song “Call Me Maybe”. It was wildly different than her other songs, but she was encouraged by everyone around her (especially her old friend and former tour mate pop punk musician Josh Ramsay from Mariana’s Trench) to write pop songs for her album Curiosity.
“Call Me Maybe” immediately shot to the top of the online charts, and reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Charts. Not only that, it became an instant meme with celebs who love to lip synch. Famous singers like [kwlink 26418]Selena Gomez[/kwlink] and Katy Perry would post vids lip synching to the Carly’s song! Needless to say, it was an instant hit and won her a spot on Justin Bieber’s label.
“It’s just me on my guitar in my bedroom writing journal entries. Everything is true for me in this. You can’t sing about love if you haven’t felt it, and you can’t sing about hurt if you haven’t experienced that, too. It’s almost not fair to your audience.”
