BMX bikes are definitely the coolest of all the different types of bikes. Bicycle Motocross or BMX is like the skateboarding of the biking world filled with racing, fun tricks and extreme vertical air maneuvers. It’s known as one of the extreme sports because some of the BMX bikers are crazy sick!
Racing Roots
The kids of California invented BMX bikes back in the 1970s. Kids were into having lots of fun all day long, so they discovered it was a lot of fun to race their bicycles in the dirt hills. They made fun obstacle courses and someone figured out that a smaller bike with jagged tires was easier to balance through the sharp turns and steep jumps. The BMX bike was born!
In the 80s, skateboarding became popular with a cool surfer style and BMX racers joined in on the fun. BMXers added pegs to the wheels and BMX contests were full of trick competitions. Nowadays, BMX tricks are just ridiculously skilled. Check out this video…
Victorious Vertical Variations
After the invention of the half pipe, skateboarding went vertical and the BMXers joined in on the fun. But because the BMX bike has a little more stability than a skateboard, the BMXers took the half pipe to a new level and they developed huge jumps for vertical aerials.
BMX biking is now a huge industry and becoming more popular every year. BMX racing and freestyle are some of the biggest attractions at events like the X Games and the Dew Tour. Big blockbuster movies have showcased BMX bikes and some of its great athletes. Check out this one called "Rad":
