This week on American Idol (Season 11, Week 5), the groups perform, but not everyone survives the cut. Then the remaining contestants sing their hearts out in the solo performance round. Read Kidzworld’s recap of “Hollywood Round 3,” which aired on February 15, 2012, to discover what you missed.
Round 2: Groups
It was a jam-packed week as the round 2 groups hit the stage. First up was the Betty’s, who were divided in their opinions on preparation. In the end, only two survived the cut. Next was Group Sauce, who set the bar high with their performance. In the morning, it seemed that the previous day’s illness was just a 24 hour bug. But not long into the group performances, contestants began to pass out.
Round 3: Solos
After the harsh round of cuts, the remaining contestants each delivered a solo performance with an accompanying band. This round really let the season 11 contestants shine. After their performances, the judges didn’t offer critiques. Instead, they divided the constestants into four rooms. Only one room was eliminated, keeping early favorites, such as Johnny Keyser, David Leathers Jr., Jen Hirsch, and Heejun Han, safe.
Performance Challenge
On Thursday night, the top 70 contestants divided into groups once again to prepare a performance for the judges. The cuts were tougher than ever. By the end of the challenge, the judges hadn't sent enough people home and were forced to cut people at random to create a top 40. Shockingly, the judges let some strong contenders go, including Johnny Keyser, Britnee Kellogg, and Schyler Dixon, whose brother Colton is still in the competition.
