Spy Kids: All the Time in the World comes out on DVD today, November 22! In the movie, the kids must stop the evil Timekeeper from stealing time and taking over the world. In order to preserve their memories, they make a time capsule. A time capsule is a way for the current generation to preserve something for the future. People often put books, toys or other special mementos in a sealed container and bury it in the ground until a future date. When the time capsule is opened, the future generation will see what was important to people in the past.
Build a Time Capsule
In honor of the new DVD release, here are some ideas for how to create your own time capsule.
Choose a Milestone
Decide on a special date to celebrate! It might be something significant for your family, friends or school.
Collect Your Artifacts
Choose what you would like to go into your time capsule. Everyone will have something different that is special and has meaning for them. Ideas include toys, books, souvenirs, pictures or school assignments.
Create an Inventory List
Make a list that includes what items are in the time capsule, and why you have chosen them.
Contain Your Items
Find an appropriate container to protect your items. This might be a coffee can, plastic container, shoebox or anything else you can find. Seal the box to ensure no one breaks in before they are supposed to!
Clock Your Timeline
Choose a date to reopen the time capsule. Generally, they should remain closed for at least a year. But, the longer you can wait, the more fun it will be!
Conceal Your Capsule
Time capsules are often buried, but they can really be hidden anywhere. Just make sure you remember where you put it!
Countdown and Retrieve
Wait the determined amount of time, and then open your time capsule! Celebrate by throwing a party or having a special meal with family and friends. Look at the items in the capsule and share why they were important to you when you buried them.
