Soul Surfer, starring AnnaSophia Robb, tells the true story of Bethany Hamilton, a teenage surfer on the verge of going pro. Soul Surfer hit theatres on April 8, 2011.
Teenage Surfer
Bethany Hamilton and her family lived to surf. She and her brothers, as well as many other kids in their Hawaiian community, were homeschooled so they could spend more time catching waves. After winning a surf competition, Bethany and her best friend Alana are picked up by sponsors. Bethany decides to stay home from her church’s mission trip to Mexico in order to practice for her next competition—a decision that changes her life forever.
Shark Attack
Bethany goes with Alana’s family to a remote surf spot to practice. After just a little while in the water, a shark appears and pulls Bethany and her surfboard underwater. While Alana panics, her father and brother take action, and bring the armless and surprisingly calm Bethany to safety.
Life Goes On
In the days and weeks following the accident, Bethany must learn to overcome many obstacles. But one thing is undeniably certain. She will surf again. She takes part in the mission trip to Thailand, where she and her church group help the tsunami survivors. Seeing the devastation and loss that so many people suffered, Bethany gains a new perspective and appreciation for life.
The Bottom Line
Soul Surfer stars AnnaSophia Robb (from Bridge to Terabithia, and Because of Winn-Dixie), alongside Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt and Carrie Underwood. Bethany Hamilton shows how hope and passion can build strength in the human spirit. Soul Surfer is about overcoming great obstacles and becoming a better person in the process.
