Gwyneth Paltrow replaces Mr. Schu for a week of carefree singing in "The Substitute" (Season 2, Episode 7). Find out what happened this week on Glee!
Monkey Flu
This week on Glee, principal Figgins and Mr. Schu both get a case of the monkey flu and spend some quality time away from school. In Mr. Schu’s absence, Gwyneth Paltrow steps in as the substitute teacher Holly Holiday. Sue Sylvester also steps in as principal, and tries to overthrow Mr. Schu.
With Mr. Schu deeply sick, ex-wife Terry reappears to take care of him. This throws a kink in the love triangle with Emma and her dentist boyfriend, as Mr. Schu and Terry participate in some extra-curricular activities. Thankfully, by the end of the episode Mr. Schu tells Terry to leave him alone and all returns to normal!
Singing in the Rain
As the new teacher for Mr. Schu’s Spanish class and glee club, Ms. Holly Holiday thinks the kids should be able to choose their own songs for sectionals. Gwyneth Paltrow starts by singing a version of Cee Lo’s “Forget You,” and encourages the glee club to think about what they really want to sing. She even sings a duet with Rachel of “Nowadays” from the Chicago musical. At the end of the episode Mr. Schu returns, only to be fired by Sue! Finally, after hours of begging from glee club, he regains his job. The whole glee clubs joins with Mr. Schu and Holly to sing a great mash-up of Gene Kelly’s “Singing in the Rain” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella.”
