Into the Wild
Bindi Irwin has always had an appreciation for the environment. The daughter of Steve Irwin, the Australian wildlife expert, and Terri Irwin, the owner of the Australia Zoo, Bindi grew up surrounded by nature and animals. From a young age she made regular appearances on her parents’ show, The Crocodile Hunter Diaries, which allowed her to explore the wild outdoors. She was even named after her father’s favorite crocodile at the Australia Zoo.
From the Swamp to the Big Screen
In 2007, Bindi became the star of her own show, Bindi the Jungle Girl, which was created for Discovery Kids. The documentary-style show followed Bindi through her adventures across the world, covering everything from elephants in Asia to lions in South Africa. The show lasted for two seasons and won Bindi a Daytime Emmy award for Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series.
After the show, Bindi produced a fitness video for kids called Bindi Kidfitness, which grossed over $75,000 in sales. Recently, Bindi starred as Kirra in the 2010 film Free Willy 4, which was released in March 2010. Truly dedicated to the environment, Bindi donates 10 percent of all of her profits and salary to Wildlife Warriors, a charity that was founded by the Irwin family.
Trouble in Paradise
Tragedy struck the Irwin family in late 2006 when Bindi’s father was accidentally killed by a stingray while shooting footage for his show. Bindi released a single called “Trouble in the Jungle” in memory of her father, and continues to inspire young environmentalists across the globe by following in her father’s footsteps.
