Hey coach, Who did Manny Ramirez get traded to after the Dodgers and when?
Actually Manny was not traded. He was claimed on waivers by the Chicago White Sox from the LA Dodgers on August 30th, 2010. The White Sox did not have to give up any players to get Manny. The only thing they had to do was to pay out the rest of Manny’s contract with the Dodgers for 3.8 million dollars.
Moving on Manny
Manny has now played for 4 different teams in the Major Leagues. Here’s a list of teams that Many has played for since he was drafted in 1993:
- Cleveland Indians
- Boston Red Sox
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- Chicago White Sox
Trading is Tough
The trouble with trades in any sport is that it’s tough on the athlete and it’s also tough on the fans. First, the athlete has to pack up with his family and move to another city. Some athletes are traded so many times in their career that they can never buy themselves a home. Bobo Newsom was traded 16 times in his 20 year career as a pitcher.
Being a fan is also tough if the players are always getting traded. You might have bought yourself a Manny Jersey in Los Angeles, but once he moved to Chicago, your jersey is kind of useless now. Imagine if you were a Manny fan since 1993. You would have had to buy 4 different jerseys now. I bet you someone has done just that.
Boost in Business
There is a lot more trading going on in sports these days. When a big all-star player gets traded or moves from one team to another, there is a short term boost in business, ticket sales and merchandise. When Manny got moved to Chicago, there were a lot of new Manny Jerseys purchased by Chicago fans who would not have bought anything had he stayed in LA.
