Some people just can’t be themselves. Here’s our list of the Top 10 Alter Egos of all-time!
No. 10: Sacha Baron Cohen / Ali G
Comedian and actor Sacha Baron Cohen has a few alter egos: Borat and Bruno. But it was Ali G that launched him into stardom. Ali is a young man from the inner city, immersed in Jamaican culture and way of speaking. He is a ridiculous figure of fun but Sacha uses him to ask provoking questions in interviews with important people, like Donald Trump, Buzz Aldrin and John McCain.
No. 9: Eminem / Slim Shady
Eminem says his Slim Shady character says the things that Eminem can't. In the late 90s, no character created as much controversy or triggered as many censorship debates as Slim. There were rumors Eminem and his alter ego would retire after 2005's Encore album, but both were back in this year's Relapse.
No. 8: Miley Cyrus / Hannah Montana
Hannah Montana is the rock-star alter ego that originated on Miley Cyrus' Disney Channel show, but Miley later adopted the Hannah Montana persona when performing during concerts, particularly during her Best of Both Worlds tour. Hannah is supposed to represent the pop-superstar side of Miley that contrasts with her down-to-earth "normal" self.
No. 7: Nick Twisp / Francoise
In the new movie Youth In Revolt, Michael Cera plays not one but TWO characters: dorky teen Nick Twisp and Francoise - a French bad-boy manifestation of everything Nick is not. (Michael technically also plays Carlotta, a third character in drag).
No. 6: Clark Kent/ Superman
There could be an entire list of superheroes with alter egos but Superman is one of the most iconic. As Clark Kent, Superman is the spectacle-wearing mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet. But quick as a flash he can change into his costume in a phone booth and fly to the rescue as Superman.
No. 5: Beyonce / Sasha Fierce
Beyonce Knowles is an incredibly successful recording artist. She left Destiny’s Child behind to forge a solo career and branched out into movies. She wanted to present a different persona to the world and the I Am … Sasha Fierce album came out in 2008. Beyonce said that she developed this alter ego on stage when she wanted to explore her more aggressive side.
No. 4: Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde
Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde was published in 1886 and made into a movie in 1941. The story is about the inner battle between good and evil that a character named Dr. Henry Jekyll (a kind physician who experiments with a potion to isolate evil) struggles with. When Jekyll drinks the potion he becomes Mr. Edward Hyde, a cruel and violent man who stalks the streets of London at night.
No. 3: Mariah Carey / Mimi
Mimi is Mariah Carey’s DIVA – but hasn’t Mariah been acting like a major diva (someone who needs someone else to wrap a towel around her when she gets out of the pool and hold an umberella over her head when it’s raining) ever since she lost her curly hair?
No. 2: Christina Aguilera / Xtina
Christina Aguilera decided to shed her wholesome image in 2002 with the release of her album Stripped. During this time, she referred to herself as Xtina, even getting a tattoo of her nickname on the back of her neck.
No. 1: Sabrina / The Teenage Witch
