What do you get when a cute kid and a loveable whale team up? A great new movie called Free Willy: Escape From Pirate’s Cove! This family film starring Bindi Irwin, whose dad was the famous Crocodile Hunter, is about a girl trying to save a lost orca from a lifetime of imprisonment.
Pirate’s Lair
Bindi playes Kirra Cooper, a 10-year-old girl whose dad sends her off to South Africa to live with her grandfather – the owner of a run-down seaside tourist trap called Pirate’s Lair.
After Kirra arrives, a storm separates a young killer whale from his pod. The whale gets trapped in a lagoon in front of Pirate’s Lair. Kirra’s grandfather sees the orca as a chance to make money, while Kirra only sees a poor, endangered creature (who she names Willy) and wants to reunite it with its family. To make matters worse, a rival amusement park owner wants the whale for himself.
Animal Planet
Besides Willy, this movie is filled with cute animals, including Kirra’s grandfather’s pet penguin. Plus, the film teaches you a lot about echolocation, which is something that whales use to figure out where they are.
