Doubting Tiberius

James Tiberius Kirk is smart but directionless—it’s only when he enlists in the Starfleet Academy and sneaks aboard the USS Enterprise that he begins to understand his destiny. It’s there that he meets his rival and eventual friend, Spock—a cool-headed Vulcan who doesn’t approve of James’s impetuous actions. Together they must solve the mystery of the rogue Romulan ship that murdered James’s father twenty years ago and continues to threaten the safety of Starfleet.

Special Features

True Trekkies will want to get their hands on a Blu-Ray copy of Star Trek, if only to check out these awesome bonus features. The director J.J. Abrams claims he was thinking about the DVD during filming, so he recorded a lot of material specifically for the DVD release. Fans definitely benefit from his foresight because this edition is packed with extras.

The deleted scenes include:

  • Spock’s Birth
  • Klingons Take Over Narada
  • Young Kirk, Johnny and Uncle Frank
  • Amanda and Sarek Argue After Spock Fights
  • Prison Interrogation and Breakout
  • Sarek Gets Amanda
  • Dorm Room and Kobayashi Maru (original version)
  • Kirk Apologizes to the Green Girl
  • Sarek Sees Spock

And the Blu-Ray includes these extras:

  • Starships - An in-depth look at the creation of the film's starships and vessels.
  • Planets - How the art department created the look for planets such as Delta Vega.
  • Props and Costumes - Paying homage to the original series was very important with this update, and here's how they did it.
  • Ben Burtt and the Sounds of Star Trek - Sound designer Ben Burtt shares the music he created for the newest Trek.
  • Gene Roddenberry's Vision - The vision of Gene Roddenberry as told by J.J. Abrams, Leonard Nimoy, previous Star Trek writers and producers, and scientific consultant Carolyn Porco.
  • Starfleet Vessel Simulator -Here you can see a 360˚ model of the Enterprise and the Narada including some looks inside as well some fun firing their weapons onscreen.

The Bottom Line

The new revamped version of Star Trek had a lot to live up to, but with great chemistry between the characters, dazzling visual effects and a fast-paced plot, audiences and critics alike were forced to set their phasers to “stunning.”
