Mean Mister Minister
Money isn’t the only problem—the newly appointed Minister of Education Geoffrey Thwaits (played by Colin Firth) is not a fan of the way St. Trinian’s operates. Okay sure, the girls are a little out of control, but when Mr. Thwaits threatens the girls’ free expression, the feuding cliques realize they need to band together against Thwaits or risk having the school shut down.
Based On The British Series
St. Trinian’s is a revival of a cartoon series from the 1950’s that spawned four hit movies. An attempt to revive the franchise in the 1980’s failed—The Wildcats of St. Trinian’s and the later movie, Carry On Columbus from 1992 weren’t as funny as the original, but this new jaunt is surprisingly edgy and refreshing. There are also a lot of funny nods to other movies the actors have starred in—there are more than a few Pride and Prejudice jokes (Colin Firth starred as Mr. Darcy) and at one point, when Kelly suggest stealing Vermeer’s Girl With The Pearl Earring, her friend Chelsea responds, “Oh my God, you want to steal Scarlett Johansson?!”.
Cool Cameos
Mischa Barton of The O.C. fame plays JJ French, model Lily Cole plays Polly and the comedian and frequent MTV Video Awards host, Russell Brand stars as Flash, a petty criminal with a penchant for jewelry who helps the girls sell homemade vodka and later poses as a German black market art dealer so the girls can try to steal some valuable art.
The Bottom Line
St. Trinian’s is energetic and funny with lots of over-the-top theatrics. The only time the movie fails is when it tries to hard to sell a “girl power” image. I guess we can still blame that one on the Spice Girls.
