TrackMania DS :: DS Game Preview

Feb 20, 2009

Mario Kart is, by far, the most popular racing game around. Even then, some people have complained that it doesn’t do enough to bring new, fun features to racing games in general. On the other hand, TrackMania is a racing game that has a lot of variety.

Fast-Paced Fun

Each race in TrackMania lasts less than 30 seconds. This is mostly due to the fact that each race is held on a fairly short track with fast cars and ends after the first lap. It is easy to fall in love with the fast-paced races, since it makes it very easy to start or stop playing whenever. As well, short races mean that there will be fewer chances to make mistakes and players can easily master a track within a few minutes.

However, this doesn’t mean that the game isn’t challenging. Players might be re-starting the first ten seconds of a race over and over before they are able to make a big jump without falling off the track. Luckily, those ten seconds represent half the race and players don’t have to do too much afterwards to take the gold.

A New Twist on Racing Games

The game also offers a “Platform” mode, which is even more challenging. In this mode, the goal is not to complete the track as fast as possible. Instead, the goal is simply to get to the end! There are hazards, holes in the ground, difficult jumps, and narrow ledges to navigate. It is like playing a hard level of Mario, but in a car.

Another great mode is the Puzzle mode. Here, players have to make a track that follows certain rules and then race on it. However, if the player flexes some ingenuity, they will be able to build in some shortcuts for themselves while still obeying the rules!

TrackMania DS looks to be a very promising game that brings new life to a run-down genre. Look forward to this game when it comes out in March.
