Fans receive shocking news that Backstreet Boys have postponed tour dates so A.J. McLean can enter rehab - Rollingstone releases a review of *NSYNCs upcoming Celebrity CD.
On July 9, 2001 fans received shocking news that Backstreet Boys have postponed a month of tour dates so A.J. McLean can enter a 30-day rehab program for alcohol abuse, depression and anxiety.
The rest of the band broke the news Monday on TRL. A.J. had come to them the day before and said, "Guys, I need help." AJ is already three days into his treatment at a residential rehab center. According to his mom, he is feeling safe, optimistic and "He's very, very positive," said Denise McLean.
They wanted their fans to know the truth. The recent death of his grandmother, whom he was very close with only added to the problems. The band is hopeful A.J. will be ready to join them after his treatment but are willing to give him the time he needs.
After Monday's emotional MTV appearance they released a statement saying, "We trust that our fans - who've always stood by us will understand this decision is absolutely necessary in order for A.J. to be well. We look forward to seeing all of you on the road soon." All shows have been called off until August assuming A.J. is doing better and would begin again on August 7th in Vancouver, Canada. The band will make up the canceled shows in September 2001.
*NSYNC's Celebrity isn't out yet but Rollingstone.com has released a CD review of the upcoming album giving it three out of five stars. One comment worth mentioning is... "Celebrity goes several steps further outside the proven boy-band sphere" - a big compliment coming from a credible source like Rollingstone. The countdown to Celebrity's release continues as fans anxiously count the sleeps until July 24.
