The Pokemon collecting just keeps on going with the Pokemon card game’s Diamond & Pearl – Great Encounters set. It lets you meet more of the Sinnoh region Pokemon, including a new legendary Pokemon, three Theme Decks, Pokemon Tools and four powerful new LV.X cards! Gary checked it out and here’s his Pokemon review.
Meet the Legends!
Loaded with 106 new cards, this new set brings a few more flavors of Pokemon fun. First is the four new LV.X power-up cards for Cressalia, Darkrai, Dialga and Palkia – making these powerful Pokemon even stronger! The Cressalia and Darkrai LV.X cards are awesome, unfortunately the Dialga and Palkia ones are lame. The new Pokemon Tools - items your Pokemon can hold to gain bonuses, are a cool idea. Unfortunately there are only two of them!
Endless Night Theme Deck Review
Mixing Dark, Fire and Leaf Pokemon, this deck is a bit crazy. Darkrai the dream Pokemon leads the way with some fantastic attacks that can really mess up your opponent’s strategy. The rest of the Pokemon aren’t so hot, especially the Stage 2 Beedrill – it powers-up for each Beedrill, but there’s only one in the deck! There are also a lot of attacks where you flip coins to cause damage. If you’re lucky you can clobber your opponent, but bad luck can ruin your attack. It’s a fun deck and Darkrai is awesome, but it’s not reliable.
Thumbs Up:
- Darkrai rocks!
- Lucky coin-tosses = tons of damage.
- Houndoom = Wow!
- Lots of paralyzing attacks.
Thumbs Down:
- Unlucky coin-tosses = no damage.
- Lots of ho-hum Pokemon.
Infinite Space Theme Deck Review
This Psychic and Water deck is full of sturdy Pokemon – they’re hard to KO and they can heal damage! Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of heavy hitters - Exploud and Arbok are your best. Palkia lets you control the Arena you battle in, but doesn’t do much damage and Transback can remove the Defending Pokemon from the fight without knocking it out. D’oh! This deck is interesting but not great.
Thumbs Up:
- Tough basic Pokemon that can heal themselves!
- Palkia lets you control the Arena.
- Amulet Coin = lots of extra cards!
Thumbs Down:
- Palkia sucks.
- Not a lot of attack power.
Great Encounters :: Legendary or Lame?
This set has a lot of legendary Pokemon in it, but it falls flat with weak Dialga and Palkia Pokemon, barely any of the new Pokemon Tools and two useless LV.X cards. Plus, something went wrong with the shiny foil cards – everything slid down a bit so they all look weird! It’s a real shame, but this set is more lame than legendary.
There's a new set of over 100 Pokemon cards on the way in the new Pokemon Trading Card Game: Diamond & Pearl - Great Encounters set! It arrives on Feb. 13, 2008 and it's all about huge Pokemon having epic battles. Not only are there new versions of Dialga and Palkia, there's a mysterious new legendary Pokemon that's rising out of the darkness to do battle. There are also three new theme decks - Eternal Time, Endless Night, and Infinite Space for new players to grab and get battling.
