This rising star has the potential to be one of the best point guards in the history of the NBA. We take a closer look at Deron!
Mother Knows Best
Deron grew up in Dallas, TX where was raised primarily by his mother Denise - his father disappeared when he was a toddler. Denise was a college basketball star, so she was the one that taught Deron how to play. Before long, he was one of the best players in Dallas, TX. After a standout career at The Colony High School, Deron signed to play at the University of Illinois. By the time he was a junior, he led Illinois to a number one ranking and to the 2005 National Championship Game - where the Fighting Illini fell to North Carolina. After his incredible junior year, Deron left for the NBA Draft where he was selected third overall by the Utah Jazz.
Replacing a Legend
Playing the point guard position for the Jazz is a lot of pressure because of the legacy of John Stockton - who played for the Jazz and was one of the best point guards in history. But the ultra-competitive Deron stepped right up to the challenge as he quickly became a success in Utah. After a successful rookie season, Deron really blossomed his second year as he finished the season second in the NBA in assists and carried the Jazz to the Western Conference Finals.
One of a Kind
Deron is one of those players who is respected by everyone. He plays hard every night, he knows how to win and most importantly, he can play. He can shoot, pass, defend and has a spectacular crossover dribble. So far in the 2007-08 season, he is averaging 20 points and nine assists per game. He has been named to the U.S. Olympic Team that will compete in Beijing and is a lock for this year's All Star Game in New Orleans.
Chris Paul Rivalry
Deron Williams and New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul are both considered the point guards of the future. They came into the league together at the same time - Deron was drafted third overall by the Jazz, while Chris was the fourth pick in the '05 Draft. A lot of people debate who is better and who should have been picked first, so there will always be a friendly rivalry between the two. Many people say Chris Paul is the next Steve Nash because of his lightning quick moves, while Deron is more like the next Jason Kidd because of his passing.
