Arrr matey! This here game be a pirates booty of action, adventure and laughs. Check out what Gary has to say about Lucasarts latest PS2 game and its not-so heroic hero, Guybrush Threepwood.

Shiver some timbers and make way for the latest and greatest pirate adventure ever to hit the seven seas. Guybrush Threepwood returns to the Tri-Islands with his new wife - Elaine Marley. But everybody thinks she's dead!

Her house has been destroyed and an Australian gazillionaire is swindling all the pirates out of their hard-earned loot. Did I mention the undead pirate LeChuck? He's back to make life miserable for Guybrush. It's time to whip out Guybrush's razor-sharp wit and straighten things out.

Escape From Monkey Island is the fourth in the series from Lucasarts and the first to go 3D. Lucasarts really pulled it off too. The characters look bright and lively, like "real" cartoon pirates. The backgrounds are still 2D but look impressive. The graphics really bring the Tri-Islands and all the swashbuckling pirates to life.

snappy comebacks

There are a few problems here and there. There are a few bugs in it and some of the puzzles can be really tricky. But that's about it.

How hard is the game?

The controls are easy and the game isn't too hard. The trick is finding every last joke.

Thumbs Up:

  • Great humor.
  • Great monkeys.
  • Great game!
  • Doesn't need a monster computer.

Thumbs Down:

  • Bugs in the rigging.
  • The controls could be a little better.
