The WUSA

Dec 27, 2006

It's all about kicks from chicks. More than 300 years ago the first all girls soccer game took place. It happened in Scotland in a match that featured married women playing against unmarried women. Now the all-women's game has arrived in America - but it won't be the married vs. the unmarried. The Womens United Soccer Association (WUSA) kicked off over the Easter weekend with the Bay Area CyberRays playing the Washington Freedom.

The Teams
The WUSA will have eight teams from across America. They are: the Atlanta Beat, the Bay Area CyberRays, the Boston Breakers, the Carolina Courage, the New York Power, the Philadelphia Charge, the San Diego Spirit, and the Washington Freedom.

Players to Watch
US National team stars Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain will be the most well known names in the league. Other notable names include striker Sunny Wenn of China, Sissi from Brazil and Canadian forward, Chuck Hooper (her real name is Charmaine, but she goes by Chuck.) The Atlanta Beat will be giving their opposing teams double trouble. The Beat have a set of twins on their squad - Julie and Nancy Augustyniak.

The Playoffs
The first WUSA Championship game will be played in August, 2001. Any games going into overtime will be decided by a sudden death "Golden Goal."

Learning from the Pros
Many of the teams offer summer soccer camps for kids of all abilities. Some campers may even get a chance to learn some tips from the leagues top pros. If you'd like more info on joining these camps, head to www.wusa.com.
