US Masters Golf Tournament History

The Masters Golf Tournament started in 1934 and is played at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Since 1940, the tournament has been played during the first full week of April. The Masters Golf Tournament was not held from 1943 to 1945 because of World War II. To help with the war effort, cattle and turkeys were raised on the grounds of the golf course.

Masters Golf Tournament - The Course

The Augusta National Golf Club is considered by many golf gurus to be the most beautiful golf course in the world. The course is home to thousands of migratory birds and hundreds of thousands of different trees, flowers and shrubs. Each hole on the course is named after a plant or shrub. The Number 3 hole is called "Flowering Crab Apple".

The Masters Golf Tournament Green Jacket

The champion of the Masters Golf Tournament not only gets a whole lotta cash - he also gets a green jacket, which is awarded to the winner each year. The jacket is taken home by the winner for a year before he returns it to the Augusta National Golf Club. The green jacket is then stored at Augusta National and is available to the golfer whenever he decides to visit. The winner of the Masters Golf Tournament also receives an automatic invitation to the tournament every year for life.

Masters Golf Tournament Firsts

Phil Mickelson's victory at the 2004 Masters Golf Tournament was his first victory at a major tournament and just the second time a left-handed golfer won the event. When Mike Weir won the 2003 US Masters Golf Tournament, he set two firsts. Weir became the first left-handed golfer and the first Canadian to win the Masters.

Masters Golf Tournament - Oldest and Youngest

  • Oldest Winner - Jack Nicklaus became the oldest golfer to win the Masters Tournament, at 46 years, two months and 23 days old, in 1986.
  • Youngest Winner - Tiger Woods became the youngest champion, when he won the Masters Tournament in 1997. He was 21 years, 3 months and 14 days old. With his victory at the 2005 Masters, Tiger Woods has won the tournament four times.
  • Useless Facts About the Masters Golf Tournament

    The color of the drink napkins given to patrons at the Augusta National Golf Club perfectly match the color of the grass - so if someone drops their napkin, it will not show up on television.
