The 411 on ADHD

ADHD
Check out this situation - a friend of yours is really crazy-hyper and it's kind of funny at first, but then it gets on your nerves. You want them to just chill out, and they try, but just can't. They might have ADHD.
ADHD - What is ADHD?
ADHD is
Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. Look around you - five out of one hundred kids you know may have it. We all
get bored at times,
can't sit still, lose focus or throw a
temper tantrum. With ADHD, you can have all of the above but it can really mess up
things at home, school and with
your buds.
ADHD - The Cause
Even though it's being
studied by doctors, the exact cause of ADHD is unknown. Many believe it has something to do with issues
in the brain, but nothing specific has been
discovered. It seems as though ADHD is
genetic, which means it runs in families, so check your
family tree to see if others may have suffered from
similar behavioral issues.
ADHD - The Treatment
ADHD can be treated. All kinds of people, from
movie stars to
athletic superstars, have ADHD. They talk about growing up with it and how
they have succeeded inspite of it. With ADHD, you can still work hard in school and do well, but you may
need help with
study skills or even need medication. If you think you need a prescription, you and
your family should talk to
a medical professional who can diagnose you and prescribe something appropriate.
ADHD - Dos and Don'ts
Be patient with yourself and others.
Don't tease people at school if they need extra time or extra help.
Don't dare them to do stupid things (people with ADHD may find it harder to say no and stop themselves).
Stay away from drugs and alcohol (drugs and alcohol can make you more impulsive).
