By: Lynn Barker

Once a mega-villain and criminal mastermind, Gru (voice of Steve Carrell) adopted three little girls and went “straight”, becoming a businessman trying to sell jams and jellies… that taste awful. Now our government wants him to save the world on the good guy side. He’s in!

Back Into Action

Once master-villain Gru (Steve Carrell) is now living a single-dad life with his three adopted daughters, Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Elsie Fisher), while running a jelly-and-jam making company to pay the bills. When “someone” starts using a huge, powerful electromagnet to cause world-wide havoc, the elite “Anti-villain League” sends agent Lucy Wilde (Kristin Wiig) to recruit Gru to fight on the good guy side.

Is It El Macho?

Gru suspects that the baddie might be restaurant owner Eduardo Perez (Benjamin Bratt) who looks like a long presumed-dead super villain named El Macho. Meanwhile, we see that Gru’s Minions are slowly disappearing, being sucked up by the giant magnet. Gru is so busy he doesn’t notice.

The Evil Plot

While Gru and Lucy investigate the Perez Mexican restaurant, we see that the captured Minions are being turned into wild, evil killer critters by a secret serum!  Margo falls for Eduardo Perez’s cute, “bad boy” son Antonio (Moises Arias), Gru and Lucy start a mutual attraction and little Agnes is worried about making a Mother’s Day speech when she has no mom. When Gru doesn’t admit his love for Lucy, she leaves for an assignment in Australia

Betrayal and Final Confrontation

Gru learns that Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand) has left his employ to invent things for El Macho, who, indeed is also restaurant owner Eduardo. At a big Cinco de Mayo party. Margo gets dumped by Antonio and Lucy returns to confess her love to Gru but she’s grabbed by El Macho who is about to launch his evil, now fuzzy purple Minion army on the world. Will Gru’s girls help their dad stop El Macho? Will Nefario come back to the good guy side? Will the Minions be made “good” again? Will Gru and Lucy finally get together?

Wrapping Up

More Minions (both good and bad), romance for both Gru and Margo, more silly stunts, fun songs, 3-D madness and throw in some James Bond-style spy gadgets and you have a pretty darn entertaining sequel to the popular Despicable Me. Of course, if you aren’t a fan of the little yellow Minions, you might not be as happy with the film.

The only real distraction was that the story seemed a bit overcomplicated with action on many fronts but with all the crazy, slapstick humor, you might not notice. Hey, you might be happy just watching Margo at the Cinco de Mayo party wearing a sombrero made of tortilla chips with yummy guacamole dip in the top! How clever. We want one!

Stick around for a Minion-centric, 3-D comin’ atcha “show” over the closing credits. Keep watching for Minion-starring movie in theaters this December. For a fun time for all ages, we’ll go 4 stars on Despicable Me 2.
